If anyone has any idea how Israel strums...

...this song, PLEASE let me know. The song is the beautiful Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World ukulele mash-up, by deceased ukulele hero Israel Kamakawiwo'ole.

I need to find a slow motion tutorial... which is exactly what I'll post if I can figure it out.

The song is just a ukulele and it sounds like it should be easy to figure it out, but there is something deceptively complex about the beat. I wonder if it's possible he uses a different tuning too. I did find this discussion, which only told me people are having just as much difficulty as I am having.

I'm not sure if you've seen the lessons at Iamhawaii.com, but Aldrine Gurrero gave a lesson on Iz's "Somewhere over the rainbow" there. Check out Lesson 6 at Here.

YES!

See, this is exactly why I have this blog, so good citizens like gx9901 can share their knowledge. I'll check out that video lesson and see if I can learn how it's done the right way.

...oh yeah, and... thanks for pointing out that other thing, Mundane Turbulence. It is also important that we share the knowledge that he was huge.

*ahem* Uh...sorry.

aye, sorry mundane turbulence, that reads way crueller than I meant it too. I swear it looked like a funny contrast between the two posts, but now it looks just mean-spirited... like I'm a real asshole...

seriously, the guy was huge. Noticeably and remarkably so. wikipedia has his weight at 768 pounds at one point, and he died too early from "weight-related" respiratory illness.

The guy was HUGE, and in the ukulele world, he was even huger.

Oh, no need to apologize (I understood your comment in the spirit you gave it)--I just felt like an ass for skipping past his beautiful music and going right for the obvious!

Actually, I knew nothing about Israel, and just thought he was like...some skinny old African man. That's what he sounds like to me, anyway, hence my surprise at finding otherwise.

I've always liked that massh-up, anyway. I'm trying to remember what movie I first heard it in...

Thanks Tyler, that's a useful video to start with. The other video (linked by gx9901 above in the comments) goes into more detail, but it is definitely not an easy place to start.

I wish I could find a video of Israel playing it live too...
